MAT SOUTH UNDER 14 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT CONCLUDES IN THRILLING FASHION
Thekwane High School played host to the highly anticipated Mat South Under 14 Basketball Tournament, which came to a thrilling conclusion over the weekend. The event saw 26 teams – 14 girls' teams and 12 boys' teams, from across the region to showcase their skills and teamwork.
In the girl's division Empandeni High School's team, led by Coach S.V. Ndlovu, dominated the competition, claiming the top spot. An elated Coach Ndlovu praised his team's determination, "I'm incredibly proud of my girls. They worked tirelessly to perfect their strategy and executed it flawlessly on the court."
Minda High School, under the guidance of Ms. N. Dube, secured the runner-up position. "We may not have taken the top spot, but our girls showed remarkable resilience and growth throughout the tournament," Ms. Dube said.
With so much effort Matopo High School rounded out the top three, demonstrating impressive skill and sportsmanship.
Exceptionally, Empandeni's Diana Ndlovu was named the Girls' Most Valuable Player (MVP) and also took home the Top Scorer award, impressing with her exceptional skill and consistency throughout the tournament.
As hosts, Thekwane High School's boys' team, led by Coach M. Gwenzi, rose to the challenge, securing the championship title. Coach Gwenzi attributed their success to teamwork: "Our boys played selflessly, supporting each other every step of the way. It's an honor to coach such talented young athletes."
Cyrene High School, led by Mr. T. Weale, claimed the runner-up spot. "We faced stiff competition, but our team's dedication and discipline earned us a well-deserved second place," Mr. Weale said.
Then Mtshabezi High School, under the guidance of Mr. B. Ncube, who also served as the tournament director, took third place.
Mthabisi Sibanda from Cyrene was named the Boys' MVP, while Thekwane High's Praise Dube took home the Top Scorer award, showcasing his impressive shooting skills.
The tournament's success was largely due to the tireless efforts of the officials, led by Charmaine Chirindah. "We're grateful for their fairness and professionalism, which ensured a smooth and enjoyable competition," said Mr. M. Ndlovu, head of Mat South basketball.
Thekwane High School's head was praised for hosting the tournament and providing exceptional hospitality. "Their support and warmth made this event truly special," added Mr. Ndlovu.
